Namibia is unlike anywhere else. Vast, wild, and astonishingly beautiful, it is a land where some of the world’s oldest deserts meet endless horizons, where towering crimson dunes rise from the earth like sculpted cathedrals, and where wildlife has adapted to thrive in one of the planet’s harshest—yet most mesmerizing—environments.

With a landmass nearly twice the size of California and a population of just over two million people, Namibia is the second least densely populated country in the world. The result is something increasingly rare: a profound sense of silence, solitude, and freedom. Here, you’ll photograph landscapes untouched by crowds, witness and capture spectacular sunrises and sunsets beneath crystal-clear skies, and understand why Namibia is one of the world’s most sought-after photography destinations.

Our adventure takes us from the colorful Atlantic coast to the legendary dunes of Sossusvlei, home to some of the tallest sand dunes on Earth. We’ll photograph sunrise at Deadvlei, where ancient camel thorn trees stand frozen in time against brilliant white clay pans and deep orange dunes, creating one of the world’s most iconic and surreal landscapes.  An optional sunrise hot air balloon flight offers the chance to soar silently above the world’s oldest desert, capturing breathtaking aerial views as the first light paints the dunes in brilliant shades of gold and crimson.

We’ll step back in time as we explore the haunting diamond-mining ghost town of Kolmanskop, where drifting desert sands slowly reclaim abandoned homes, filling empty rooms with sculpted waves of golden light—a dream setting for creative photography.

Namibia’s wildlife is equally extraordinary. In the vast wilderness of Etosha National Park and the Kalahari Desert, we’ll search for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, black rhinos, zebras, blue wildebeest, springbok, and magnificent herds of oryx (gemsbok), Namibia’s national animal. We’ll also photograph fascinating desert-adapted species, including meerkats, bat-eared foxes, brown hyenas, ostriches, and, with a bit of luck, the legendary black-maned Kalahari lion. More than 650 bird species make Namibia a paradise for bird photographers as well.

Beyond the landscapes and wildlife, Namibia offers an extraordinary cultural experience. We’ll spend time with the remarkable San (Bushman) people, whose traditions and deep knowledge of the land stretch back thousands of years, and visit the striking Himba people, renowned for their distinctive red otjize body paste, intricate hairstyles, and enduring ancestral customs. These authentic encounters offer rare opportunities to connect with cultures that have remained deeply rooted in their heritage while creating striking environmental portraits.

Throughout our journey, we’ll travel in comfortable, air-conditioned pop-top Land Cruisers accompanied by experienced local naturalist guides whose knowledge of Namibia’s wildlife, history and ecosystems adds tremendous depth to the experience. Charles and Melissa will be there every step of the way to offer photographic guidance, help you make the most of every location, and ensure you return home with compelling images — whether you photograph with a DSLR, mirrorless camera or smartphone.

LODGING

You’ll be staying in a variety of 4-star luxury camps, hotels and lodges throughout your stay.  A limited number of single rooms are available upon request and require an additional single supplement.  Please let us know if you would like a single room upon registration.  Every effort will be made to find a suitable roommate, should you require one.  All rooms have an ensuite bath, and complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the various hotels.

GETTING THERE

Your journey begins upon arrival at the Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) where our tour guide will pick you up and bring you to the Hilton Windhoek hotel.  Please do not book any non-refundable airfare before February 8, 2027.  We will notify you on or before that date to let you know that the trip is officially a “go.”

TRANSPORTATION

During our adventure, you’ll travel in a spacious air-conditioned pop-top roof Land Cruiser, with each guest guaranteed a window seat. Onboard you will find a fridge/freezer, ample water, a personal library with many books, maps etc., 220-volt electrical chargers and intervehicle radios to allow the group to stay connected. All ground transportation is included in your tour package.

• Monday, August 30

Arrive Windhoek.  Transfer from Hosea Kutako International Airport to Hilton Windhoek hotel (tour included). Overnight at Hilton Windhoek (tour included).

• Tuesday, August 31

Morning departure and guided drive to Bagaelle Kalahari Game Ranch. Dinner, followed by an evening nature drive. whilst at Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch on days 2, 3 & 4.

• Wednesday, September 1 – Thursday September, 2

Morning and afternoon Nature drives with Sundowners, plus Cheetah excursion.  Optional San (Bushman) people excursion.

• Friday, September 3

Morning departure and guided drive to Luderitz.

• Saturday, September 4

Photographic excursions to Kolmanskop and Luderitz surroundings.

• Sunday, September 5

Morning departure and guided drive to Sossuvlei.

• Monday, September 6 – Tuesday September, 7

Guided excursions in the Sossusvlei area (sunrise at Deadvlei, sand dunes, etc.). Optional sunrise Hot Air Ballooning experience (not included in the tour price).

• Wednesday, September 8

Morning departure and guided drive to Okonjima. Arrival at Okonjima Plains Camp, followed by afternoon Leopard tracking activity.

• Thursday, September 9

Morning departure and guided drive to Etosha Heights Private Reserve.  Check into Etosha Mountain Lodge.

• Friday, September 10 – Saturday September, 11

Morning, afternoon and evening drives and activities as offered and arranged by the lodge. Hide visits also included during the stay.

• Sunday, September 12

Early morning departure (guided drive).  Visit Himba Living Museum and photograph the people and village there.  Return to Windhoek.  Overnight at Hilton Windhoek hotel.

• Monday, September 13

Group departures onward.  Transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport (tour included).

PROFICIENCY LEVEL

All skill levels and camera formats welcome, including smartphone cameras.  Participants should also have a basic understanding of exposure and camera operation in modes other than “Auto” or “Program.”

PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY

For a majority of this trip, you’ll be photographing either from a safari vehicle itself, or close to the vehicle.  However, some locations will require being able to walk short distances under a quarter mile in length with gentle grade.  Some of the terrain in Sousselvlei can be physically challenging, if you wish to climb the dunes.  To reach Deadvlei at sunrise, in particular, you’ll need to be able to walk about 0.7 mile in deep soft sand uphill at a moderate grade carrying your camera gear and tripod.  The altitude in this region varies between 2,000-3,000 feet above sea level, and temperatures rise rapidly after sunrise.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Due to the amount of planning and logistical complexity for this tour — including advance bookings, permits, accommodations, transportation arrangements, and the coordination of local partners — all payments are non-refundable.  Your registration secures one of a limited number of spots, and funds are committed well ahead of the tour start date to ensure an exceptional experience for all participants.

If you choose to cancel for any reason at any time, or are unable to attend (even if for unforeseen medical or family emergencies), no refunds or credits will be issued, and you are responsible for paying the workshop tuition in full, including any remaining balances.  However, if you can find someone to take your place, we will gladly refund all monies paid once your replacement has completed registration and paid in full.

Because of this no-refund cancellation policy, we strongly recommend you purchase comprehensive “Cancel for Any Reason” travel insurance that includes full reimbursement for the entire workshop tuition, any non-refundable airfare, lodging costs, medical expenses, personal equipment, etc. and any other associated travel costs incurred.  Because Namibia is a remote African country, you might want to make sure your travel insurance policy includes emergency medical evacuation coverage as well.  Here’s one website that compares travel insurance quotes and coverage using a side-by-side comparison tool: https://www.squaremouth.com/.  Please be aware some travel insurance companies require that you purchase travel insurance within a certain number of days of paying your deposit and registering for the tour.

In the unlikely event that the tour must be postponed or canceled by Charles Needle Photography (e.g. due to safety concerns, low enrollment or circumstances beyond our control), you will be notified as soon as possible and be given the option to receive a full refund, or be given the option to apply your payment toward any future workshop or tour within one calendar year from the date of cancellation.  By registering for this tour, you acknowledge and agree to this no-refund cancellation policy.
