Workshop Details
Join Charles and Melissa for an unforgettable 10-day photography adventure in the heart of South Africa’s most breathtaking natural display — the world-renowned wildflower bloom of Namaqualand.
Only here can you witness 3,500 species of wildflowers blooming simultaneously — 1,000 of which are found nowhere else on Planet Earth. This once-a-year, super-bloom phenomenon transforms the arid landscape into a vibrant tapestry of jaw-dropping color unlike any you’ve ever seen before. It’s like stepping into a living Impressionistic painting!
Having photographed in this area previously alongside Canadian professional photographer, Freeman Patterson (who has visited Namaqualand no fewer than 47 times during his lifetime), Charles and Melissa will lead you to spots with the highest flower density, greatest variety of species and most dramatic contrast between floral carpets and arid terrain.
A sampling of exceptional flora you’ll likely encounter along the way includes: Namaqualand daisies, Gousblomme, Vygies, Nemesias, Lachenalias, Babiana, African Corn Lilies and thousands more. Many species are rare and grow in this region only. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to photograph quiver trees set against breathtaking skies, and occasional wildlife such as Springbok, Oryx, Dassie, Cape Weavers and Meerkat.
There will be daily guided excursions with special emphasis upon how to craft expressive Impressionistic imagery, compose “intimate landscapes,” and improve your macro photography skills.
In addition, throughout the 10 days, you’ll receive lots of 1-on-1 personalized instruction from Charles and Melissa, and there will be plenty of lectures, mini-assignments and supportive group image evaluations.
All skill levels and camera formats welcome, including smartphone cameras. Attendees should also have basic proficiency in post-capture image editing software, such as Lightroom, Photoshop, Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed.
Limited to 12 participants. Secure your spot early for this once-in-a-lifetime magical spectacle.

LODGING
You’ll be staying in a charming, recently renovated 4-star family-run country hotel in the heart of Namaqualand. A limited number of single rooms are available upon request and require an additional single supplement. Please let us know if you would like a single room upon registration. Every effort will be made to find a suitable roommate, should you require one. All rooms have an ensuite bath, and complimentary Wi-Fi is available in most areas in the hotel.
GETTING THERE
Your journey begins at a hotel near the airport in Cape Town, South Africa. You will want to book a roundtrip flight to/from Cape Town International Airport (CPT). If traveling from the United States, three airlines service Cape Town International Airport: Delta, United and American. Delta offers connecting flights to Cape Town from cities including Atlanta, New York and Washington, DC. United provides connecting flights to Cape Town from New York and Washington, DC, while American services flights to South Africa with connections to Cape Town. Please do not book any non-refundable airfare before February 8, 2026. We will notify you on or before that date to let you know that the trip is officially a “go.”
AIRPORT ASSISTANCE
“Meet & Assist” service upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is available for an extra charge. An agent can meet you at your arrival gate and help speed you through passport control and immigration procedures. Then escort you to baggage claim and assist with getting you where you need to go. This service is also available upon departure from CPT. We will provide options for booking this service on your own upon registration.
AIRPORT TRANSFERS
Transportation to/from Kamieskroon is included in the workshop cost. Kamieskroon is about a 6 ½ -hour drive from Cape Town. Our private drivers (whom we know personally) will meet everyone the morning of August 22 at your hotel (close to the Cape Town Airport) and transport you (and your luggage) to Kamieskroon. You will travel in two comfortable passenger vans. When the workshop ends, those same drivers will depart Kamieskroon the morning of September 1 and return you to your hotel close to the Cape Town Airport for an overnight stay (included in the workshop price) and departure home the following morning. Upon registration, please let us know if you plan to drive your own car to Kamieskroon (not recommended if you are unfamiliar with the roads and are not local to South Africa).
TRANSPORTATION
During the workshop, you’ll travel in two comfortable passenger vans (driven by the same two drivers who drove you from Cape Town). Transportation is included in your workshop tuition. Upon registration, please let us know if you plan to drive your own car during the workshop (not recommended if you are unfamiliar with the roads and are not local to South Africa).
ITINERARY
- Friday, August 21
Arrive Cape Town. Overnight at hotel near the airport (included in your workshop tuition).
- Saturday, August 22

- Sunday, August 23 – Monday, August 31
Morning lectures (The flowers don’t “open” until around 10 am!), extensive daily photography excursions in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, with concentration in Namaqua National Park. Areas covered will likely include Skilpad Wildflower Reserve, Soebatsfontein, the Kamiesberg mountains, Goegap Nature Reserve in Springbok and possibly some coastal areas.
While in the field, you’ll receive lots of 1-on-1 instruction from Charles and Melissa. There will also be some live demonstrations and plenty of time to explore at each stop. This is an area that is not heavily photographed and has not yet been discovered by Instagram! Enjoy photographing on backroads with hardly another human being in sight for long stretches of time.
Wildflower conditions in this region vary daily and are influenced by rainfall, temperature and elevation. Charles and Melissa will lead you to areas with the highest flower density, greatest variety of species and most dramatic contrast between floral carpets and arid terrain. Enjoy picnic lunches in the field most days and dinners at the hotel (included), followed by evening image sharing and/or supervised “lab” time to work on images.
- Tuesday, September 1
Morning departure for Cape Town (about a 6 ½-hour drive). Lunch along the way (not included). Check into the same hotel near Cape Town International Airport (included in your workshop tuition). Dinner at the hotel (not included).

PROFICIENCY LEVEL
All skill levels and camera formats welcome, including smartphone cameras. Participants should also have a basic understanding of exposure, camera operation in modes other than “Auto” or “Program,” and basic proficiency in post-capture image editing software such as Lightroom, Photoshop or Snapseed.
PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY
For a majority of the week, you’ll be photographing near the road. There may be some brief, short hiking in some locations (all under a quarter mile in length with gentle grade). The altitude in this region varies between 2,000-3,000 feet above sea level.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Due to the amount of planning and logistical complexity for this workshop — including advance bookings, permits, accommodations, transportation arrangements, and the coordination of local partners — all payments are non-refundable. Your registration secures one of a limited number of spots, and funds are committed well ahead of the workshop start date to ensure an exceptional experience for all participants.
If you choose to cancel for any reason at any time, or are unable to attend (even if for unforeseen medical or family emergencies), no refunds or credits will be issued, and you are responsible for paying the workshop tuition in full, including any remaining balances. However, if you can find someone to take your place, we will gladly refund all monies paid once your replacement has completed registration and paid in full.
Because of this no-refund cancellation policy, we strongly recommend you purchase comprehensive “Cancel for Any Reason” travel insurance that includes full reimbursement for the entire workshop tuition, any non-refundable airfare, lodging costs, medical expenses, personal equipment, etc. and any other associated travel costs incurred. Because Namaqualand is in a remote location, you might want to make sure your travel insurance policy includes emergency medical evacuation coverage as well. Here’s one website that compares travel insurance quotes and coverage using a side-by-side comparison tool: https://www.squaremouth.com/. Please be aware some travel insurance companies require that you purchase travel insurance within a certain number of days of paying your deposit and registering for the workshop.
In the unlikely event that the workshop must be postponed or canceled by Charles Needle Photography (e.g. due to safety concerns, low enrollment or circumstances beyond our control), you will be notified as soon as possible and be given the option to receive a full refund, or be given the option to apply your payment toward any future workshop or tour within one calendar year from the date of cancellation. By registering for this workshop, you acknowledge and agree to this no-refund cancellation policy.
